Real Road Riding Checklist: What to Learn Before Kolkata Traffic

Slow-speed balance, mirrors, U-turns and safe distance: the checklist every new rider should finish before riding in Kolkata traffic.

Before you ride in Kolkata traffic, tick off these skills. If one feels shaky, practise it more on a quiet road first.

The checklist

  • Slow-speed balance. Ride at 5–10 km/h in a jam without putting your feet down.
  • Mirrors and indicators. Check the mirror and switch on the indicator before every turn.
  • U-turn control. Turn on a narrow road in one go, without putting your feet down.
  • Safe distance. Keep at least one vehicle's gap from the vehicle in front.
  • Smooth braking. Rear brake first, then front, without skidding.
  • Calm stops. Stop exactly at a line without panic.
