Can You Learn a Scooty Without Knowing How to Cycle?

Yes. Here's how complete beginners who never rode a cycle learn to ride a scooty safely in Kolkata: balance, throttle, braking and road practice.

Beginner on her first scooty ride with feet ready on the ground

Many people believe you must know how to ride a cycle before learning a scooty. That's not true. At Zero Fear, most of our beginners have never ridden a cycle.

Why a scooty is different

A cycle needs pedalling and balance at the same time. A scooty has no pedals: you sit, keep your feet ready on the ground, and use a gentle twist of the throttle. That makes the first steps much easier.

Where we start

  1. Getting to know the scooty. Posture, handle, throttle and both brakes. Your trainer moves the scooty with you.
  2. Feet-down balance. You move at walking pace with your feet close to the ground, so you never feel you might fall.
  3. Smooth throttle. Tiny twists, never sudden ones.
  4. Start and stop. Controlled starts and stops, again and again, until they feel natural.

Then what?

Once start, stop and balance feel easy, we add turns, then quiet roads, then normal traffic. You move ahead only when you're ready. That is our rule: confidence before speed.

How long does it take?

Our Basic Scooty Training is 15 classes of about 30 minutes. Some learners need fewer, some more. We go at your pace.
